Since Chanukah is just around the corner and since you can't go wrong with a Tomie dePaola book, I chose My First Chanukah as this week's featured book. And while I am definitely not an expert on Chanukah traditions, I think dePaola does a lovely job of introducing a child to the basics. "Chanukah is the Feast of Lights. Every year we celebrate it for eight nights. We light candles to remember Judah the Maccabee and his brothers...."
From learning about the menorah and the shamash (the "helper candle"), to eating latkes and playing Chanukah games with the dreidel, to receiving presents, singing songs and saying the blessings, dePaola makes this a book for all children and families to enjoy.
